The human brain is a remarkable organ that is constantly evolving. It controls your conscious and subconscious mind. It controls your thoughts, moods, and actions. It stores your short-term and long-term memories and it makes you who you are. However, if this small organ stops functioning, then so would you. This is why you must nurture your brain to get it to function well. According to neurologist Marie Pasinski, this can be achieved through exercise, a good diet, mental stimulation, and socialization. Skill enhancement such as vocabulary building, creative writing, and language learning can further boost brain power.

So, if you want to improve your mental abilities, enhance cognitive thinking, and heighten your memory try doing the following:

  •  Meditation

Meditation entails sitting in a quiet, peaceful place, closing the eyes, and taking five or more deep breaths to encourage a heightened state of awareness. Through deep inhales and exhales, the mind can relax and prepare for any upcoming mental activities. Meditation further reduces stress, calms the body, and enables the brain to process information with ease.

  • Physical exercise

Set a time for daily workouts  to improve brain function because exercise stimulates the release of happy hormones, namely, dopamine and serotonin. Exercise further reduces stress hormones.

  • Learning something new

The best way to exercise your brain is to challenge it by doing something you haven’t done before. Do something unfamiliar and challenging such as playing chess, playing tennis, painting, etc.

  • Writing

Writing  is beneficial, therapeutic, and can boost brain power. It is a skill that stimulates your analytical ability and creativity.

  • Music

Listening to soft music relaxes the mind and reduces stress.

  • Laughter

Laughing releases feel-good chemicals called endorphins that reduce stress and stimulate new ideas in the brain.

  • Healthy diet

Food has a great influence on brain function. Healthy brain food includes nuts (walnuts & cashews), green vegetables (kale, spinach, avacado), fish (salmon & cod), and berries (strawberries & blueberries).

  • Sleep

Resting for 8 to 10 hours a night renews cells, improves memory, stimulates creativity, promotes problem-solving abilities, and activates critical thinking skills.

  • Stress management

Managing stress through relaxation techniques (yoga, deep breathing, & meditation) protects brain cells and enhances memory and learning.

  .

  • Socialization

Sometimes doing fun activities with friends such as watching a comedy or barbequing can boost brain power and improve memory. Friends and social gatherings enrich cognitive skills tremendously.

Remember that incorporating these ideas into your daily routine will do wonders for your brain. Just be patient and persevere.
