The talented Omar Bakr Al-Ammari was embraced by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), which contributed to developing his abilities, investing his potential, and supporting him to move forward on the path of excellence and success.
Omar Al-Ammari has a remarkable scientific success story that deserves to be highlighted. How could it not be, when Omar won first place in the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity (Creativity 2017), which is held annually by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
Omar tells us about his winning project in the Creativity Olympiad, saying: “My participation in the Creativity Olympiad last year was for a research titled (The Role of the Regenerative Wnt Pathway in Regulating Cancer Stem Cells in Breast Cancer), and I was in the third year of high school at the time. This research is concerned with studying cancer stem cells in breast cancer and how to regulate these cells, because these cells are characterized by several characteristics, the most important of which is that they divide randomly and continuously, which is why it is difficult to treat this type of cancer. This project aims to find a new way to regulate these cells in order to find an opportunity to treat cancer.”
Because every project or scientific research has a story that was the reason for its existence on the ground, Omar tells us about the story of his project: First, my story with the National Olympiad for Scientific Creativity began from the first middle school grade until this moment. Every year, I participated in a project that was different from the other, and I used to read and review the most important modern scientific studies, and the latest studies in the medical field in general. I continued reading medical research until I gradually found myself very attracted to research related to stem cells, because of the characteristics and capabilities that these cells have. After a short period of time, I began to understand the most important basic concepts related to stem cell research, and this is what prompted me to work on the project.
Regarding the obstacles that Omar faced and how he overcame them, Omar pointed out that he faced some obstacles related to his studies because he spent most of his time working on the project and preparing to participate in the Creativity Olympiad.
“Since I was in the third year of secondary school, it was difficult to continue my studies and prepare for the necessary tests for university applications, such as the aptitude and achievement tests, in addition to balancing them with implementing my project. These were among the most important obstacles that I faced and dealt with by organizing my time gradually until I was able to give each task its own time and complete all its requirements completely,” he added.
Regarding his future plans to develop his project, he says, “I seek to learn new techniques in order to enrich my information and skills, which will develop my research.”
Omar concluded his talk by praising his experience with the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), saying: “It is the first supporter for me and many students, and no one can deny its merit. If it were not for God and then the Mawhiba Foundation, I would not have achieved these accomplishments. It was the entity that provided me with the initial support for my project, in addition to being a basic and important reference for me in knowing the steps of scientific research and other matters related to scientific ethics.”
There are many hopes and ambitions that I hope to God will become a reality one day, but no one can achieve their desires except with God’s will, and God willing, I will strive hard to achieve my ambitions, so that I can be a source of pride for this generous country and be the best example to follow.
Omar gave some advice to his talented peers:
First, at the beginning of my participation in the Creativity Olympiad, I was very interested in winning first place, but after that I realized that the real victory is not in the place, but in the experience and benefits that I can hardly count.
This competition changed me a lot and refined my personality. I learned a lot from it, and the (Creativity Olympics) is only the beginning.
