A young Saudi woman in the prime of her life, she shone and launched her ambition into her Arab surroundings, winning the second best social project award at the level of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, when she participated in the Emirates Competition for the Youth of the Arabian Gulf and ascended the podiums with the flag of the nation.
She is Maha Raja Al-Otaibi, a student at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, talented since she was young. Her start was when she participated in the Saudi Festival for Science and Creativity “Science Festival 2015”, and it was a rich and enjoyable experience for her, through which she achieved a lot, as she says, “I registered in the Creativity Olympiad to achieve my dream and change the community’s idea of innovation in the Kingdom, and it was one of the most beautiful scientific competitions in which I participated with the innovation (I Hear You).”
After that, Maha worked on developing her innovation, and the participations continued until she got the opportunity to fly in the space of creativity outside the borders of the country. She participated in the Emirates Award for the Youth of the Arabian Gulf competition, with the project “I Hear You”, about which she says, “My project is about developing headphones for people with hearing disabilities, and adding features that give them high quality that allows them to be used underwater.”
“Social service and charity were my priorities in my creative field.”
The Saudi talent recalls the memories of her first innovation and the beginning of its story with her, especially since it has to do with one of the people she loves the most, as she says, “Social service and love of good were among my priorities in my creative field, and helping my brother Faisal, who was suffering from using his own headphones underwater, was the primary reason for my invention of this product.”
Maha Al-Otaibi added that she faced some obstacles at the beginning of the road, including the community’s lack of acceptance of the idea of innovation because she is a Saudi girl, and the community’s view of this field, but thanks to God, then her determination and ambition, she succeeded with others in changing this idea, and influenced many young men and women and directed them to participate in scientific competitions such as the Creativity Olympiad.
Entering the field of innovation and entrepreneurship was a turning point in Maha Al-Otaibi’s life, as this matter brought about a remarkable change in her personality and development. The 19-year-old girl aspires to serve many categories of people with special needs through her future projects, as they are the category she targets in all her innovative projects.
Maha Al-Otaibi always repeats that the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) has provided her and other talented men and women in the country with a lot, such as participating in international scientific competitions and training courses, and developing her project. She sees herself in five years - God willing - as a businesswoman and a pioneer in the field of community work, especially with the development witnessed by governmental and private institutions in terms of supporting innovation and projects, and encouraging Saudi talents. At the same time, Al-Otaibi does not hide her hope for greater and better support for talented and innovative people in the future.
The talented Maha Al-Otaibi added that her victory in the Emirates Competition for the Youth of the Arabian Gulf and raising the Kingdom’s flag high had consequences, as society’s view of the Saudi girl and innovation changed, and there was great interest in learning about her project. Al-Otaibi is currently working on improving her English language in order to develop her scientific project, as she faces great difficulty in searching in foreign references.
