Obesity has become a global epidemic, affecting increasing numbers day after day, until the total number of deaths due to obesity, according to World Health Organization statistics for the year 2014, reached about three million cases.
These figures give a dangerous indication of the spread of obesity, and the financial and health burden it causes, which prompted many research centers to pay attention to this problem, and conduct scientific research in this field.
Hassan Al Shammari was a high school student when he started thinking about the problem of obesity and the field of stem cells. After meeting specialists and researchers in the field of stem cells, he was accepted and given the confidence to be a member of the research team in the Stem Cell Unit, College of Medicine, King Saud University. The research title was determined, and it was “Determining the effect of the C-11 inhibitor on the process of specialization of mesenchymal stem cells into fat cells.”
Hassan Al Shammari Project:
Controlling fat cells in the body is one of the solutions to combat obesity
Hassan talks about the research objective, saying, “The research seeks to study the effect of a specific chemical compound on the process of stem cells specializing into fat cells, and aims to discover the method and process by which fat cells are formed inside the human body, which will lead in the future to the innovation of other research that controls the formation of fat cells, and thus prevents obesity and stops it from occurring.”
Al-Shammari is currently studying the preparatory year at King Saud University. He participated in the Intel Arab World Science Competition, which was held in Alexandria, Egypt, last December, in the field of medicine and cellular and molecular biology. He won a special award presented by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba).
Al-Shammari recalls that when he started his research, he faced many obstacles to conducting good scientific research, the most prominent of which was communicating with a research center that would accept and support a student in general education. Hassan adds, “My qualifications at that time were not university, and most research centers only support undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. However, this obstacle was overcome by researching and visiting several research centers, requesting their support, and giving me the opportunity to participate with them in scientific research.”
The talented 19-year-old adds that the second obstacle he faced was his scientific background, which for a general education student is much lower than that needed to conduct good scientific research at a high level. However, with persistence, determination and ambition, he succeeded in overcoming it by expanding his horizons and increasing his scientific knowledge by reading about new developments and research in the field of research.
future plans:
I seek to conduct experiments that support the results of my scientific research.
As always, Hassan Al Shammari plans for his future. He has set his academic future in the field of medicine, and sees himself as a researcher interested in new medical research. As for research, he is working hard to complete it with a set of experiments that support its results and increase its strengths, in order to be able to publish it in peer-reviewed international scientific journals.
The turning point in the life of the talented Al-Shammari and the development of his scientific path was his participation in summer research enrichment programs.
The turning point in the life of the talented Al-Shammari and the development of his scientific path was his participation in summer research enrichment programs, such as the Ibn Sina Medical Research Program, which was held at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in cooperation with “Mawhiba.”
Al Shammari praises the support and care he received from “Mawhiba” to develop his project through the supervision of the scientific committee, which includes specialists and researchers, who enriched the research and contributed to its development with their suggestions and consultations.
He also thanked a group of institutions that cooperated with him and his colleagues who are following the same direction, including: the Stem Cell Unit at the College of Medicine at King Saud University, which trusted him, welcomed him, and accepted him as a high school student, for their participation and cooperation with them in conducting this research, as well as the Riyadh Education Administration and the Manarat Riyadh Schools, which facilitated matters for him and helped him devote himself to research.
Message from the student Hassan Al Shammari to the gifted:
Knowing the basics of scientific research saves time and effort for talented people.
Al-Muwaheb Al-Shammari advised his peers who have an idea for a new project or scientific research to investigate all the research centers in the Kingdom.
