Dr. Khaled bin Nasser Al-Awhali, “a professor of psychology at Qassim University,” was a great admirer of “Da Vinci and Michelangelo,” and was interested in drawing and design like them. He was one of the founders of the art exhibition that was held to celebrate the centennial at King Abdulaziz University, where he worked at the time as a faculty member.

Dr. Khaled says: “At that time, I did not think about innovation, not because I was unable to do so, but because I did not find a guide, and I did not pay attention to it as an influential movement in the national economy, and as a human investment industry.”

Art and innovation!

Da Vinci, the most famous artist, had approximately 180 inventions! However, Dr. Khaled believes that his talent as an artist does not make him far from the field of inventions and science, stressing that Da Vinci, the most famous artist, had approximately 180 inventions, and his imagination as an artist urged him to further research and knowledge, which in turn led him to discovery.

My field of work.. an opportunity for innovation!

Dr. Khaled began training teachers to teach students thinking and problem-solving skills, and this was his real start in the field of innovation. He began to raise issues and problems that the teacher could discuss with his students to stimulate their thinking abilities, and then he would think about the problem and find an innovative solution that might benefit the nation and society.

He invented a device to conserve electricity, and for it he won the gold medal at the 2010 Innovation Exhibition: Jeddah, and a patent from King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology.

He also invented several other devices, one of which is to conserve water, another solves the problem of delays due to traffic congestion, and the third helps control cars that park more than necessary in places where parking is not permitted, such as airport entrances, as a better alternative solution than the current solution, which is to tow them with another car.

Dr. Khaled says: “My innovations are not in a specific field. They are usually the result of a problem that I encountered, as a family man. This is evident in the invention of a device to rationalize electricity consumption, a device to rationalize water, or the innovation may be the result of any problem that I encountered on the road like any other person.”

He stresses: “My work in the field of problem-solving training taught me that every problem has a solution, and that we are capable of creativity and innovation.”

Innovation by Dr. Khaled Al-Awhali:

Electricity saving device:

The idea of this device came after Dr. Khaled sensed the extent of the danger resulting from not being aware of the danger of electricity consumption exceeding the rate that the wires can handle, especially in rented schools where the electricity is usually not prepared to handle the activity of an entire school, as all devices are turned on at the same time during peak hours, which could lead to fires, God forbid.

The most civilized countries are the most careful about rationalization. On the other hand, he was very concerned about the statistic that says that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has the highest rate of electricity consumption, and that it consumes approximately 900 thousand barrels per day just for electricity. In addition, he believes that the most civilized countries are the most careful about rationalization.

From this standpoint came his idea to invent a device that contributes to rationalizing electricity, and at the same time reduces the danger resulting from heavy loads on electricity, and the resulting fires, God forbid. This device measures the amount of electricity consumed daily, and the current, per second, even if it is outside its area, via the Internet and advanced technical transmission in all modern devices. It can also be followed from any room in the house, via a reader device that is connected to any electricity source. The device consists of two main parts: the first is at the home's electrical box, which is a high-frequency wave filter that reads the amount of electricity entering the box and converts it into different readings, then sends it through the wires connected to the house, and the second part receives the waves and converts them into a quantitative reading.

This device is characterised by containing a mobile chip that sends an instant message to the owner of the house, institution or other to inform him when electricity consumption increases, in order to take immediate action to reduce the loads, as the device indicator is divided into several coloured sections to facilitate identification of the level of consumption.

Dr. Khaled says: “The device’s accuracy has been tested in providing the result of public consumption immediately, and helping to save more than 25% of the value of the electricity bill. It also reduces the excess loads on the electricity network, and therefore it represents one of the best solutions to address the electricity consumption dilemma and reduce the amount of losses and costs incurred by the public sector.”

Real investment:

Through experience, Dr. Khaled deeply believed in what John Dewey said 114 years ago, that the method of memorization and retrieval is educational cheating and deception, and that we must give our students the opportunity to think. He also believed that the father and the teacher are the cornerstone in influencing the life of the new generation, and their way of thinking to be creative and innovative leadership figures who lead the helm of progress and the national economy, and that investing in raising students or children is the real investment.

From this standpoint, Dr. Khaled set two goals for himself: his sons Tayf, 13 years old, and Moaz, 11 years old. He confirmed that he would focus on guiding them towards innovation using all possible educational means, and that their creativity is his expected production and the success he seeks.

Dr. Khaled Al-Awhali.. A person who believed in his role in society, and was troubled by its issues, so he learned the secret of searching for solutions, and was able to innovate..
